If you’re planning a trip to Paris, you’ve probably wondered whether to build in a day trip somewhere — Versailles, Champagne, maybe somewhere further out. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on your own trip: how many days you have, when you’re travelling, how far you’re willing to go, and what you actually want to see. How it works

The tool asks seven quick questions: how many full days you have in Paris, how familiar you already are with the city, when you’re travelling, what would make a day trip worthwhile to you, how much of your day you’re willing to give up, how far you’re comfortable travelling one way, and how you prefer to get around.

Your answers are run through a rule-based system directly in your browser — there’s no signup, no email address, and nothing is stored. Depending on how your answers line up, you’ll get one clear recommendation, two strong options if they’re closely matched, or an honest suggestion to stay in Paris.

Sometimes the best day trip is no day trip

This part matters to us: the Finder is built to say “stay in Paris” when that’s genuinely the better answer, not to talk you into a trip you’d regret. If you only have two or three days in the city, if it’s your first visit, or if the travel time just doesn’t add up against the time you’d actually spend at the destination, the tool will tell you that directly.

A day trip that costs you five or six hours in transit for two hours on site usually isn’t worth it — especially on a short trip, or a first visit when Paris itself still has more to offer than a rushed excursion. We’d rather be upfront about that than send you somewhere you’ll regret.

A few examples of what it might suggest

The Finder weighs several possible destinations against your answers, including seasonal limits and realistic travel times. A few examples of how that plays out:

• Versailles tends to come out on top for first-time visitors interested in royal history, palaces and gardens — it’s well connected by train from central Paris.
• Giverny fits travellers drawn to Monet, art and gardens, but the tool rules it out between November and March, when the house and gardens are closed for the season.
• Champagne (Reims or Épernay) suits a slower day built around wine, food and the regional countryside, for travellers with a bit more time and travel tolerance to spare.

These are only three of the destinations the Finder considers — it also weighs options like Fontainebleau, Provins, the Loire Valley, Disneyland Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel, depending on your answers.
